The Viadukt Pulvermühle ( Luxembourgish Biisser Bréck , French Viaduc de Pulvermühle ) is a railway bridge in north-south direction in the middle of the city of Luxembourg . It begins immediately north of the tunnel, which connects directly to the northern end of Luxembourg's main train station . It bridges the most important river within Luxembourg, the Alzette , and carries the two north and east leading routes, namely the Luxembourg – Troisvierges railway in the direction of Liège and the Luxembourg – Wasserbillig railway in the direction of Trier . Immediately behind the thirteen arches brick viaduct to separate the two lines; the two associated switches are already on the bridge.

Old bridge

The structure is 242 meters long and up to 37 meters high. It was inaugurated along with the line in 1862 and has been electrified since 1959. Like that of the other two viaducts in Luxembourg City, the construction is based on plans by the Waring Brothers Company.

Bridge expansion

Since the early 2000s there have been plans to expand from two to four tracks in order to unbundle the heavy traffic at the main station for the two busy routes. Construction has been going on since the end of 2010. A construction method adapted to the width of the arch to the west of the old construction is planned, with a steel bridge construction with an overhead driveway that rests on brick pillars that will accommodate the northern route. The architect is Aurelio Galfetti , the design comes from Leonhardt, Andrä und Partner . The client is the Luxembourg State Railways (CFL) .
