VICE (short for V ERSAT I le C ommodore E mulator ) is a free emulator for various 8-bit -Computersysteme from Commodore . VICE is based on X64 , an early C64 emulator under X-Window from around 1993 .
In version 2.1, which has been available since December 19, 2008, VICE supports the C64, the C128 , the VC 20 , all PET models (with the exception of the SuperPET 9000 ), the PLUS4 and the CBM-II (also known as the C610 ). Data from the MESS emulator was partially adopted in VICE . With the PET emulation, the switch-on noise of the devices was even simulated.
The degree of compatibility with the emulated systems is very different. While the development status of the C64 emulator is considered to be very advanced, the special features of the C128 (especially the VDC graphics chip ) are sometimes only supported rudimentarily; instead of the included Plus4 emulator, the retrocomputing community often prefers the competitor product Yape . The emulation of the VC1571 drive currently only supports floppy disks formatted on one side.
VICE was originally developed for Unix and has been ported to MS-DOS , Microsoft Windows , AmigaOS , MorphOS and other platforms .
With VICEplus (current version 1.1 from May 9, 2008), a version that has been expanded to include C64-DTV support is also available, although VICEplus was once again included in this project with the release of version 2.1 of VICE.
