Life

Vicente Barrantes first studied theology , but turned entirely to literary activity in Madrid in 1848 and soon made himself a popular writer through dramatic plays, novels, short stories (including Siempre tarde , 1851) and numerous smaller poems (especially the Baladas españolas ) . At the same time, he championed his liberal views and the idea of an Iberian unitary state in political satires and historical novels: Juan de Padilla and La viuda de Padilla .

At the beginning of the 1850s he worked as an assistant civil servant in the secretariat of the Ministry of the Interior until his appointment to the Cortes opened up a new field of work for him in 1858. An accident on a trip to Cádiz soon afterwards caused a change in his previous free-thinking outlook.

In the following years he distinguished himself in the Cortes, where he fought alongside López de Ayala and in the sense of Cánovas del Castillo , then worked from 1866-68 as government secretary in the Philippines and since then has fought tirelessly in the field of colonial policy in the interests of the Colonies.

In 1872 the royal academy appointed him a member, at the same time the government honored him by appointing him to the teaching council, which was abolished after six months.

Then Barrantes retired into private life. At the age of 69 he died in Pozuelo de Alarcon (Madrid) and found his final resting place there.
