Vicente Salvá

Vicente Salvá (born November 10, 1786 in Valencia , † May 5, 1849 in Paris ) was a Spanish politician, publisher, bibliophile , Romance scholar , Hispanicist , grammarian and lexicographer who also worked in France.

life and work

Salvá studied Greek, theology and law in Valencia. Thanks to his extraordinary talent, his university teaching in Greek began in 1805, but was suddenly interrupted by the Spanish War of Independence, and he chose a life as a publisher, bookseller and bibliophile. In 1817 hostility from the Inquisition to his bookstore in Valencia led to his first emigration to Italy.

In 1820 he returned to Spain and became a deputy from Valencia in the Cortes of Cádiz (also their secretary). In 1823 he emigrated a second time, this time via Gibraltar to England, where he frequented the circles of Spanish emigration and met with Andrés Bello , among others . In 1830 he settled permanently in Paris, but was temporarily also in Spain and from 1836 to 1837 a member of Valencia's constituent assembly .

Salvá wrote an important grammar and an outstanding monolingual dictionary of Spanish and laid the foundation for a bilingual Spanish-French / French-Spanish dictionary which was completed posthumously by an editor and which has appeared under his name until recently.

His catalog of Spanish books was famous in the 19th century.
