Vicente Llorens

Vicente Llorens (born January 10, 1906 in Valencia , † July 5, 1979 in Cofrentes , Province of Valencia ) was a Spanish Romanist and Hispanist who worked in the United States.

life and work

Llorens (also: Lloréns ) studied in Valencia and Madrid. From 1926 he was a Spanish editor in Genoa , then with Leo Spitzer in Marburg (1927–1928) and Cologne (1929–1933). In 1933 he returned to Spain and did research with Ramón Menéndez Pidal and Américo Castro . In the Spanish Civil War he was on the side of the Republican General Julius Deutsch .

In 1939 Llorens went to Santo Domingo and taught at the university there. In 1945 he moved to the University of Puerto Rico . From 1947 to 1949 he taught at the side of Leo Spitzer at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore . Then he went through the mediation of Américo Castro at the Princeton University , first as an associate professor, from 1956 until his retirement in 1972 as professor of Spanish. Until 1976 he taught at Stony Brook University on Rhode Island . He returned to Spain at the age of 70 and lived in Jalance, 70 km southwest of Valencia, until his death.

The Vicente Llorens Castillo Senior Prize in Spanish at Princeton University is named after him. In Jalance the "Biblioteca Vicente Llorens Castillo" bears his name.
