Vicente de Santo António

Vicente de Santo António , actually Vicente Simões de Carvalho (* 1590 in Albufeira , Portugal ; † September 3, 1632 in Nagasaki , Japan ), OESA , was a Portuguese missionary , martyr and blessed of the Catholic Church. He is one of the many Portuguese missionaries martyred in Japan.

The family moved to Lisbon when he was a child, and at twenty-seven he was ordained a priest and joined the Augustinian order . In 1620 he first went to the Philippines as a missionary , from 1621 to 1622 he did missionary work in Mexico , then he moved to Japan in 1623. So he worked as a missionary mainly in the streets of Nagasaki. He adapted to the local culture through a Japanese name and clothing.

He was arrested in 1629 and imprisoned for three years. In 1632 he was tortured because they wanted to dissuade him from believing in Christ and he died after five baths in boiling water.

1867 he was by Pope Pius IX. beatified.

In 2001, the letters he wrote while in detention were published.

His hometown Albufeira honors him on September 7th with a folk festival and a procession .
