The Latin Wikipedia ( Vicipædia Latina ) is a Wikipedia language version with over 125,000 articles. It belongs to the group of language versions for a so-called old language .

The users ( usores ), who often belong to the neolatinist movement, come from different countries; most of them speak English or German as their mother tongue. The Vicipaedia Latina is an important factor in the Latinitas viva , i. H. of the movement for a living Latin. As with all other Wikipedia editions, the content depends primarily on user contributions and has been described as " eclectic ". In addition to topics traditionally associated with the Latin language , such as Roman antiquity and the Catholic Church , there are e.g. B. also articles on living people (approx. 7,300 articles) or scientific topics.

History and statistics

The Latin Wikipedia started in May 2002 with one Wikipedian and six articles. In April 2003 the number of employees rose to five, at that time there were 236 articles. The thousand mark for articles was reached in January 2004, the ten thousand mark in December 2006. The Latin Wikipedia received its 50,000th article in February 2011 with Cache Comitatus ( Cache County in Utah, USA), the 80,000th article in October 2012 with the Korean one Rapper PSY ( PSY ). The 100,000th Latin article was reached in December 2013, and the 120,000th in August 2015.

Over 40 Wikipedians are regularly active (more than 5 edits a month).

" Veni Vidi Vicipaedia " stickers created by Latin enthusiasts are also subjected to a rigorous grammatical analysis: Fortasse melius esset in casu accusativo? In sensu "Veni. Vidi Vicipaediam, liberam encyclopaediam." ?

Modern terms

The rules of the Latin Wikipedia do not allow any neologisms (“Noli fingere!”). In order to be able to represent objects that did not exist in classical or medieval Latin, words from modern Latin sources are used. These include scientific Latin in biology and medicine, Latin lexicons and books from the 18th and 19th centuries, the Lexicon recentis Latinitatis of the Vatican ("Lexicon of modern Latin" with online version), as well as current Latin magazines such as Ephemeris and the Latin News from Radio Bremen .

As in other internationally spoken languages, there is often more than one correct name for a particular subject, or different terms in classical, medieval, scientific and modern Latin. Wherever possible, the oldest or classic term for the page's lemma is chosen, with redirects from everyone else. Important alternative names are listed in the article with references. This practice is consistent with the general Wikipedia rules on verifiability and against terminology. There are often lively debates among users about nuances.

If occasionally no term for a modern concept can be found, the procedure is the same as in most other languages: borrowing from another language, usually Romance or English. This is how the articles for the particles photon and gluon and for the temperature unit Kelvin were created . The term is Latinized .

spelling, orthography

Vicipaedia has adopted the contemporary orthographic custom of distinguishing between U and V , but not the i and i consonant. This orthographic practice is not without ardent opponents, who point out that it only mimics the Italian spelling reform in which the i / j distinction was lost but the u / v distinction was retained.

Under the logo on the main page of the Latin Wikipedia is “VICIPÆDIA” with the ligatureæ ”. However, ligatures for the diphthongs ae ("æ") and oe (" Œ ") are not used in the articles . However, users can choose to automatically display the diphthongs as ligatures on the pages.

The articles are color-coded by the users according to the quality levels of Latinity ( gradus latinitatis ), including “Linguistic quality not yet determined” ( latinitas nondum censa ), but also “Latin needs improvement” ( latinitas inspicienda ), “Doubtful linguistic quality” ( latinitas dubia ), “Very dubious linguistic quality” ( latinitas maxime dubia ), “Poor Latin” ( latinitas corrigenda ), “Extremely poor Latin” ( latinitas maxime corrigenda ) to “Good Latin” ( latinitas bona ). According to UCLA's Latin specialist Robert Gurval , the highly rated articles are "actually very good."
