Victor Gunn
Victor Gunn (actually Edwy Searles Brooks ; pseudonyms Robert W. Comrade , Berkeley Gray , Carlton Ross and Rex Madison ; born November 11, 1889 in London ; † December 2, 1965 ) was an English writer who wrote over 1,000 novels and short stories.
As Victor Gunn, he wrote over 40 very successful crime novels between 1939 and 1965. The main characters were the unfriendly but ingenious inspector William (Bill) Cromwell, known as 'Ironside' or 'Old Iron', from Scotland Yard and his carefree, always elegantly dressed assistant, Johnny Lister.
The Goldmann Verlag , the Brooks Victor Gunn in Germany moved exclusively, named in 1964, a circulation of 1.6 million copies. Today Brooks alias Gunn is no longer very well known in the German-speaking world.
The German film Das Wirtshaus von Dartmoor was made in 1963/64 based on the novel of the same name by Victor Gunn (original title: The Painted Dog ) with Paul Klinger as Inspector Cromwell. The plot of the film, however, differs greatly from the novel, including the character of Johnny Lister being completely deleted.
In 2017, Victor Gunn's novels will be published in a new edition by Apex Verlag in Munich .
