Victor Kullberg (1824-1890)

Victor Kullberg (* 1824 in Visby on Gotland , † 1890 in London ) was a Swedish clock and chronometer maker .

Life and horological achievement

Kullberg learned the watchmaking trade from a local watchmaker who made chronometers . After his apprenticeship, he expanded his knowledge with Louis Urban Jürgensen (1806–1867) in Copenhagen. At the age of 27 he traveled to the world exhibition in London and made contacts with other chronometer makers. In 1856 he started his own watchmaker in London. He had a lifelong friendship with one of his greatest competitors, Thomas Mercer (1822–1900).

Kullberg created pocket watches with a chronometer escapement , a crown winding system designed by him and a toothed barrel. In addition, he introduced a chain guide for the worm , the "reversed fusée" proposed by the French watchmaker Julien Le Roy , which was superior to the traditional English design. His chronometers were characterized by very well thought-out constructions and clean craftsmanship.

In 1864, Kullberg submitted the first marine chronometer for testing in Greenwich, but the results were only average. As a result, Kullberg improved his designs and in 1882 finally achieved values that no other chronometer maker could improve at that time.

Kullberg was appointed court watchmaker to the King of Sweden and Norway in 1874, and was awarded the Wasa Order.
