Horst Gnekow (born July 25, 1916 in Wandsbek ; † July 10, 1982 in Lucerne ) was a German actor , dramaturge and theater director.

Life

Gnekow was the son of a professor and came from an established family of pharmacists in Wandsbek. He studied theater studies and law at the universities of Hamburg , Jena and Göttingen . In Hamburg he became a member of the Corps Suevo-Borussia , in Jena he joined the Corps Guestphalia and in Göttingen he was a member of the Corps Hannovera . With his dissertation Das Recht des Regisseurs (1940) received his doctorate as Dr. jur. and consequently turned to his passion, acting and dramaturgy. He found his final resting place in the Friedental cemetery .

He was

  • 1941–1943 trainee director at the State Playhouse in Hamburg,
  • 1943/1944 dramaturge and game director at the municipal theaters of Essen,
  • 1945–1947 dramaturge and director of the Bochum municipal stage,
  • 1947–1949 head of the artistic office, game director and chief dramaturge at the stages of the state capital Kiel,
  • 1949/1950 Director of the North Frisian State Theater Westerland,
  • 1950–1960 artistic director of the Nordmark-Landestheater Schleswig.

In 1950, as director, he founded the (second) Nordmark-Landestheater in Schleswig, today part of the Schleswig-Holstein State Theater .

He was general director at the Stadttheater Luzern (1961–1968), at the Städtische Bühnen Münster , where he staged Jahnn's Trace of the Dark Angel in 1969 , and from 1978 to 1981 at the Theater Hof .

He became known for his Shakespeare productions. In Lucerne he performed Bertolt Brecht for the first time in the west, and the performance of The Persecution and Murder of Jean Paul Marat, performed by the acting group of the Charenton Hospice under the guidance of Mr de Sade by Peter Weiss, was a sensation, not only for Swiss standards.
