Schleswig-Holstein State Theater and Symphony Orchestra
The Schleswig-Holsteinische Landestheater und Sinfonieorchester GmbH is the largest state theater in Germany and is based in Rendsburg with venues in Flensburg , Schleswig , Rendsburg, Itzehoe , Neumünster , Heide , Husum , Meldorf , Niebüll and St. Peter-Ording . The stage's program includes music theater , ballet and drama, as well as children's and youth theater (including mobile classroom productions) and puppet theater.
Due to an impending insolvency in the next few years, the institution was included in the Red List of Culture of the German Cultural Council in February 2014 and classified in Category 2 ( endangered ). In the meantime, however, the impending bankruptcy has been averted. This was achieved on the one hand through austerity measures such as B. the amalgamation of the theater production facilities and the move of the general director and central administration from Schleswig to Rendsburg, on the other hand through increased income. Equity of the GmbH and financing commitments by the shareholders point to a secure future in the coming years.
description
19 cities, districts and municipalities hold shares in the share capital. In contrast to the other state theaters, they guarantee the Schleswig-Holstein State Theater the number of performances. Ute Lemm has been the managing director and general director since August 2020 .
One focus of the theater is contemporary work in music theater as well as in acting. World premieres , commissioned works and author grants are an integral part of the stage. In recent years the children's and youth theater has been expanded and a puppet theater has been added. In addition, a new ballet company was launched, which set accents with a classical program or choreographies to rock music.
The Schleswig-Holstein State Theater and Symphony Orchestra has almost 380 employees, including around 180 in the artistic field, who provide over 700 performances per season.
history
As early as 1900 there had been efforts in the province of Schleswig-Holstein to create a Schleswig - Rendsburg - Husum municipal theater due to a decree by the Schleswig-Holstein government president . The plan was dashed by Schleswig's refusal. Only after more than 40 years did the plan become a reality.
Hermann Wagner and Paul Jaenicke got together after the end of the Second World War and began to play in the St. Pauli Theater , which at that time was not yet showing its own. They were now looking for new ways to play from Hamburg . Via Neumünster they came to Rendsburg, where the theater had been confiscated and was administered by an English supervisory officer. The two gave their first performance in December 1945 under the name “Städtebundtheater”.
After the English withdrew from the house, a contract was concluded with the city of Rendsburg. The private company became a GmbH. Neumünster, the district of Rendsburg , the city of Rendsburg and Paul Jaenicke each contributed 20,000 marks. The success was extraordinary - until the currency cut put an end to it all. So this "Städtebundtheater" was dissolved in 1949 due to financial difficulties.
In the same year, the Schleswig-Holstein state theater was built , again under the responsibility of Rendsburg. Neumünster and the Rendsburg district were other shareholders. The Landesbühne worked for 25 years under the directors Wulf Leisner , Joachim v. Groeling, Hans-Walther Deppisch and Hans Thoenies.
Then at the beginning of the 1970s the subsidies to be paid reached a level which the city of Rendsburg could no longer bear. On June 3, 1974, the contract was signed that laid the foundation for today's Schleswig-Holsteinische Landestheater und Sinfonieorchester GmbH , combined with a symphony orchestra . Partners were a total of 20 cities and districts. Locations were and still are in Flensburg , Schleswig and Rendsburg. The music theater including the orchestra is based in Flensburg, the theater was assigned to Schleswig and Rendsburg, and the administrative center was located in Schleswig. Horst Mesalla became the general director and managing director with sole signing authority .
As early as the late 1960s, the cities of Flensburg, Rendsburg and Schleswig were considering rationalizing the theater work in their venues in order to cover the costs. After the state government announced that it would freeze its subsidies for the theaters, there were fundamental discussions about a unified state theater for the first time in 1971. As a result of the talks, the three previously independent theaters in Flensburg, Rendsburg and Schleswig were merged in 1974. Flensburg became the seat and rehearsal location for the orchestra, the ballet and the music theater, while the artistic director, administration and dramaturgy as well as part of the theater are housed in Schleswig. This made both cities the locations for new productions. The head director and the other part of the theater found their home in Rendsburg. In 2016, the directorship, administration and dramaturgy moved to Rendsburg. Since then, drama production has only taken place in Rendsburg.
In the early summer of 2019, there were considerable protests in the theater ensemble against the personnel of the future theater director, Rolf Petersen, who is due to take up his post in 2020/21.
Impending bankruptcy
Despite its high income, the Schleswig-Holstein State Theater was threatened with bankruptcy more than ever in 2010 . High personnel costs and reduced audience numbers led to a hole in the box office, which was not covered by the state of Schleswig-Holstein . The state government of Schleswig-Holstein declared that a new concept for the continued existence of the theater had to be developed.
Due to the withdrawal of the operating license of the Schleswig Theater due to acute danger of collapse in June 2011, the misery worsened again. The city of Schleswig decided in 2016 that a new theater should be built on the existing “Heimat” cultural center in the “Auf der Freiheit” district. The city of Schleswig estimates the total costs for the new construction of the theater building at 9.5 million euros, which will be connected to the "Heimat" location in Schleswig and will benefit from the existing infrastructure. On February 28, 2017, a “Letter of Intent” was signed in the Kiel State Chancellery, in which the state funding for a venue of the State Theater in Schleswig was agreed with 2.5 million euros. In addition to the participation by the state, the city is investing five million euros in the construction project through the purchase of the land and planning costs; in addition to the funding commitment from the state, the municipal state associations have made a funding commitment of two million euros. The state's funding commitments are tied to the condition that the future of the state theater in its current structure is secured in the medium term through the contributions of the theater partners. With the signing of the amended partnership agreement on August 3, 2017 by representatives of 15 municipalities in Rendsburg, the basis for the further upswing was laid and the state's condition was met.
