The Victoria Peak ( Chinese 太平山 , Pinyin Tàipíng Shān , Jyutping Taai 3 ping 4 Saan 1 ) with 552 meters is the most famous mountain in Hong Kong . In Hong Kong Iceland located, it is also the highest peak of the island, but from 958 meters high, in the New Territories located Tai Mo Shan clearly dominates.
Its Chinese name Tai Ping Shan means "mountain of great peace". The summit offers a sweeping view of Kowloon and large parts of Hong Kong Island.
The Victoria Tower observation tower at a height of 379 meters, also called The Peak Tower , can be reached with the Peak Tram , a Swiss funicular that opened in 1888 .
When malaria was rampant in Hong Kong in the 19th century , Victoria Peak was the preferred residential area of the colonial rulers. Today, land prices at Peak are astronomical; the further you go up, the higher they get, so that this is where the richest people of Hong Kong have settled.
