Vicus bibiensis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vicus Bibiensis (or Vicus Bibium ) is the Roman name of a settlement ( vicus ) that was located in ancient times in the area of Sandweier of today's municipality of Baden-Baden (Roman Aquae ).

A Roman votive stone slab with the following inscription was walled into the church of Sandweier:

Diis Quadrubis vicani Bibiensis d (e) s (uo) p (osuerunt)
The inhabitants of Bibiensis set (this stone) from their property the four-way goddesses

The find shows that there was a crossroads in the village. Presumably the intersection of today's Bergstrasse with the road to Baden-Baden. The settlement belonged to the Civitas Aquensis .
