Vidöstern is a southern Swedish lake in the area of the municipality Värnamo , in the historical province of Småland , with an area of 42.61 km². It is fed by the Lagan River.
The Åminne hut, which is now a museum, is located on the west bank of the lake in Åminne . For a long time, iron ore was extracted from the bottom of the lake . After this was initially done manually from the ice cover that had closed in winter, excavators were used from 1909. In 1922 one of the excavators sank, but it was recovered. Another excavator sank during a storm in 1932, but it was not recovered. In 1942 ore mining was ended.
In the summer months, the Vidfamne , a replica of a ship from the Viking Age, is regularly out on the lake . In October 2018, an eight-year-old girl found an Iron Age sword about 1500 years old while diving .
