Multi-side planer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The multi-side planer , four-sided planer or four-sided planer , abbreviated to HM, is a woodworking machine that can carry out several planing processes in one operation . It is used for the series or mass production of square, long workpieces from sawn timber , for which a higher dimensional accuracy and / or surface quality is desired than is possible with saw cutting .

One after the other, it carries out a planing , joining and thickness planing process . It processes all four sides of the workpiece . The workpiece is moved past the respective tools on the work spindles by transport rollers . Often there are additional milling devices that enable the simultaneous profiling of all workpiece edges . As a rule, they are used for mass production of workpieces whose dimensions are between 22 mm x 5 mm and 260 mm x 160 mm.

In recent years, smaller machines have also been offered with which single-piece production makes sense. They have simple control systems that allow the machine to be set up very quickly.

Today's machines are mostly CNC- controlled or have a programmable logic controller. They adjust to the desired workpiece format using an electric motor and the current tool position or dimension is displayed digitally.

Problems with profiling

With a multi-side planing machine, if the planing heads allow this, profiling can also be carried out to a small extent . Setting up the profiles (mostly bevel or radius profiles) is usually very time-consuming because, in contrast to a planing and molding machine, the spindle is adjusted both in height and back and forth (cutting edge flight circle) over a larger area can. Although this is often possible to a very limited extent with four-side planing machines, it usually requires the use of tools, since these adjustments are usually only used for the basic setting of the machine. In addition, with a four-side planer, the table openings usually cannot be adjusted. The setting of the relatively small profiles in a four-sided planer can usually only be done by adjusting the profile heads, in which z. B. the profile knife in addition to the normal knife system in z. B. degree guides are used and can be adjusted in height.
