history

The association Vigor Lamezia Calcio was founded in 1919 in the city of Lamezia Terme , which now has around 70,000 inhabitants in the southern Italian region of Calabria . At the time of its establishment, the club was called US Vigor Nicastro . This name was kept until 1977, before the club was renamed Vigor Lamezia Calcio after promotion to Serie D and thus got its current name.

In the course of the club's history, Vigor Lamezia was rarely able to attract national attention. The club achieved its first major success right after the end of the Second World War . After having only played in lower-class regional football in previous years, in 1946/47 they made promotion to Serie C for the first time . There, however, one could not assert oneself and had to return to fourth class after a year. In the Girone S of Serie C 1947/48 they were ninth and thus reached a midfield rank, but due to a restructuring of the league, the direct relegation took place anyway. After that, Vigor Lamezia did not manage to return to the third Italian football league until 2014. Instead, the club experienced long years of amateur football, which were interrupted by short interludes in the fourth-rate series C2 . In this, the club rose in 1987 under coach Claudio Ranieri . Ranieri had at Vigor Lamezia his first coach station and coached in the course of his career including the Chelsea FC , the FC Valencia or Juventus . After Ranieri's departure in the summer of 1987, Vigor Lamezia was able to establish himself in the C2 series and played there for the following seven years initially with ambitions to return to the C1 series . These were abruptly ended by the license withdrawal in 1994. In the year mentioned the club was re-established and from then on played in the Promozione Calabria, from which they were relegated only two years later. Vigor Lamezia had hit rock bottom in the mid-1990s, from where the club slowly worked its way up again. Little by little, they pushed back into the C2 series, in which they were able to establish themselves from 2004 on. Despite a relegation back to Serie D, Vigor Lamezia developed very positively. After Massimo Costantino took office as Vigor Lamezia coach in 2010, the club finally improved steadily and in 2014, last year under the successful coach, after 66 years, it made clear the return to the third Italian football league.
