The players create and develop their own clans, train troops and improve their heroes, shamans and cities. Every improvement in the game requires certain resources such as wood, iron, food, stone, silver or the game currency gold. To get these resources, the player must upgrade the city's resource buildings, march to resource locations on the global map, or attack other players' cities. In addition, the player must collect other special items such as hero's keys or warrior sketches in order to be able to carry out improvements from higher levels.

In the game, the players are divided into different game areas, the so-called kingdoms. On average, a kingdom can accommodate around 45,000 players. As of July 2017, there were already more than 415 kingdoms.

In creating the game, the development team relied on information from articles and books on the history of the Scandinavian Peninsula, as well as TV series and films that cover the war marches and the life of the Vikings. Other sources with information on medieval Scandinavia were also used.

Paul Glader, a lecturer in journalism at the Berlin School of Creative Leadership, wrote the following about his summer experience as a clan leader in Vikings: War of Clans: “I enjoyed the summer as a Viking leader. It became clear to me that many of the real-life principles for good leadership also apply to the virtual worlds. In both cases, good leadership takes time, thought, and commitment. And a functioning team. Occasionally it can happen that one is neglecting one's management tasks and is forced to implement a succession plan or a change in the management structure. This is possibly the greatest challenge your Viking clan has to face. "
