Vilamendhoo (also: Vilamendu ) is an island in the Maldives . The very densely overgrown island, about 990 × 300 m in size, is located in the southeast of the Ari Atoll . The distance from Malé , the capital of the Maldives, is around 82 km and can be covered in around 30 minutes by seaplane . The crossing with a motorized dhoni takes up to six hours, depending on the weather and the sea. The island has a 4.5 star holiday resort operated by CCR (Crown and Champa Resorts), the Vilamendhoo Island Resort , as well as its own dive center and is known for its species-rich house reef.

Infrastructure

The island's infrastructure is designed for around 360 tourists, and its operation is managed by 430 employees. There is a small doctor station, spa, a diving center, a tennis, soccer and mini golf course, a fitness room, two fresh water pools and a sea kayak rental.

water

Reverse osmosis system for the fresh water supply of the island of Vilamendhoo

Two reverse osmosis systems fed with 60 bar pressure desalinate 290,000 liters of seawater per day for use. The seawater is initially stored in a tank for sedimentation . Metabisulphate is added to the water for bacterial cleaning of the filter and membrane. The water is filtered, centrifuged and pressed through membranes at 60 bar. Approximately 1400 cubic meters of water are stored in two tanks, which corresponds to the consumption of 5 days.

Part of the fresh water is used for the in-house mineral water production, which is filled into resealable water bottles. The drinking water is treated and sterilized through mineralization, microfiltration, activated carbon filtering and UV radiation. Reusing the glass bottles reduces the consumption of plastic bottles by more than 250,000 pieces per year.

A fully automatic wastewater system cleans the process water with filters, bacterial treatment and disinfection in order to then use it for watering the gardens. The remaining solids are bagged, dehydrated, shipped and can be used as fertilizer. The water treatment corresponds to the EU standard.

electricity

Two out of four Stamford generators cover the electricity needs of the island of Vilamendhoo

4 diesel-powered Stamford generators generate a theoretical maximum power of 3,200 kW (3 phases each 230 V with 50 Hz). The maximum power consumption of 1200KW is around 7pm. Two diesel tanks of 265,000 liters each are filled by a tanker. The daily diesel consumption when the island is fully occupied is 4700 liters.

waste

The waste is separated and pressed into compact cuboids at 10 tons of pressure. These blocks are shipped to Thilafushi and sold for export as valuable material. Garbage that cannot be sold is deposited on the dump or incinerated.

reef

The coral bleaching caused by the increased water temperature can also be seen on the house reef. In some places the corals are slowly recovering.
