The Villa Leopolda is a villa in Villefranche-sur-Mer on the French Côte d'Azur .

history

The villa was built in 1902 on behalf of the Belgian King Leopold II as a gift for his wife Caroline Delacroix.

In the 1950s the property was acquired by Giovanni Agnelli , who later sold it to Edmond Safra . After his death, the property went to his wife Lily Safra . The Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov wanted to acquire from Lily Safra, the villa in 2008 but never paid the full purchase price. Roman Abramovich later expressed an interest in the property.

Buildings and facilities

The building is constructed in the Belle Époque style and encloses around 2,700 m² including the pavilions and ancillary buildings. On the property there is a swimming pool, a cypress avenue, olive groves and an eight hectare park, as well as a helipad. In 1948 the villa was the location for some scenes from the ballet film The Red Shoes . The building has been classified as a monument historique by the French authorities . Today it is one of the most expensive mansions in the world, and its value is estimated at around 500 million US dollars.
