history

The Villa Burk was planned and built by the Giessen architect Jacob Stein in 1884 and 1885 on behalf of Ferdinand Burk, a mill owner . Azay-le-Rideau Castle on the Loire is considered an architectural model . At the time of construction there were other representative buildings that are no longer preserved today.

Since the building was sold to the medical professor Ernst Leutert (1862–1928) in 1910 , it has been called Villa Leutert. It was only slightly destroyed during the Second World War , but afterwards it was confiscated by the Americans and used as an officers' mess. The condition of the villa deteriorated after the owner changed hands again in 1960, so much so that efforts were made to demolish it in 1978.

However, a citizens' initiative successfully campaigned for the building's monument protection . In 1983 the city of Giessen acquired the villa and renovated it extensively until 1985. Today the registry office , the local court Gießen I as well as facilities of the University of Applied Sciences Gießen-Friedberg and an advice center of the DGB are located here . The youth education center and the Jokus youth club can be found in the backyard.
