Villa Rustica (Altheim-Simetsberg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Villa Rustica in Simetsberg is one of three Roman villas that were excavated in the municipality of Altheim , Braunau district , Upper Austria .

Location and dating

The site is located three kilometers southeast of Altheim. It is right between the other two villas in the room, Weirading and Wagham . Since they are exactly on one line, it can be assumed that a Roman road ran here.

The villa is believed to have been used from 75 to 250 AD, i.e. during the Roman Empire .

Research history and facility

In 1974 a part of a Roman plate was found on a field of the Simetsberg farmer, during the inspection the outlines of a wall emerged on the field through strips of vegetation. From 1991 to 1995 the villa was excavated by the Institute for Cultural History of Antiquity of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . Four buildings were uncovered, the main building, a bathing building, a rotunda, which is viewed as a sweat bath, and a somewhat secluded storage building. Building 1 (14 by 12 meters) has four rooms, one of which contained a mosaic. The walls of building 4, which was 75 meters northwest of the other three structures, were one meter thick, and plant remains made it possible to name it as a storage building.
