Villa Rustica (Altheim-Weirading)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Villa Rustica is a Roman manor located in the Innviertel northeast of the Upper Austrian town of Altheim in the village of Weirading , district of Kiriberg .

Location and dating

The site is located exactly north of the other two villas in the Simetsberg and Wagham area . Since they are exactly on one line, it can be assumed that a Roman road ran here.

The villa is believed to have been inhabited from 80 to 240 AD.

Research history and facility

The exploration of the villa began in 1913/14 with an inspection. In 1991/92 a geophysical survey of the area was carried out. In 1994 the foundations were excavated, which had already been badly affected by agricultural use and erosion, and the bathing building was excavated from 1996 to 1998. The peculiarity of this Villa Rustica lies in its size, a 50 m long corridor led to the bathroom building, which had a large area of 350 square meters for a villa rustica. The front of the main building was 100 meters long and 25 meters wide.

After the end of the excavations and the documentation, the foundations were filled in again.

Open-air museum Villa Rustica Weirading

In 2003, as part of the archeology project in Upper Austria, the bath house was reconstructed slightly offset to the side and opened as an open-air facility.
