Villa Rustica (Bellikon)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Villa Rustica von Bellikon is the remains of a Roman estate in the canton of Aargau in Switzerland .

Roman remains were discovered in 1934 about 1,300 meters south of the Bellikon church and excavated in 1941 by Walter Drack with the help of interned Polish soldiers. The villa stood on the slope of the Heitersberg and about 190 meters above the Reuss valley . Only the manor house could be recorded during the excavations. It was about 26 meters long and 16.5 meters wide. The building consisted of a hall with a portico facing the valley. In later construction phases the hall was divided into living rooms. In the north there was an extension into which an apse and a bath were built. In the villa there were remains of white wall paintings with floral motifs. The paintings probably date to the second century. Different rooms had hypocausts . The villa was in operation from the middle of the first century until before 250 and was destroyed by fire.
