Villa Torrigiani

The Villa Torrigiani di Camigliano is located about 10 km from Lucca in Camigliano, a district of the municipality of Capannori in Italy . The villa and park were built in the 16th century.

history

The rich and influential Buonvisi family had their summer residence here. The ambassador of the Republic of Lucca , Nicolao Santini , who represented Lucca's interests at the court of the Sun King in Paris, acquired the villa and the park in 1636. To this day, the construction and design of the park by André Le Nôtre has largely been preserved. The baroque facades, the design of the garden and the lost residents of the villa could be reflected in the large water basins. In the rooms of the villa and in the Teatro di Flora, the viewer will find the coat of arms of those of Santini: above two diamond tips and a blooming camellia below. In 1816 Vittoria Santini married Pietro Torrigiani. She was the last descendant of Marchese Nicolao Santini.

present

Carlo Luca, the last Marchese Torrigiani, gave the villa and garden to his daughter Simonetta when she married the Principe di Stigliano, Don Carlo Colonna. The family decided in 1967 to open the gates of the villa and the park to the public. The family lives on the first floor of the villa during the summer months.

The baroque entrance portal to the garden opens onto an approximately 700 m long avenue of tall cypress trees. It leads to the baroque villa, which dominates the garden with its massive facades.

The garden in its current form goes back to the original concept of a French garden by Santini from 1650. At the beginning of the 19th century, large parts of it were transformed into an English garden and exotic trees from all over the world were planted. Large lawns now determine the image of the grandiose garden. Numerous impressive exotic trees such as Liriodendron tulipifera , Atlas cedar , Taxodoium distichum or Osmanthus fragrans as well as the extensive planting of camellias , the Torrigiani heraldic flower, date from the time the park was redesigned in the 19th century .

The garden is known for its imaginative water features, which the marquis used to frighten his guests with. In order to escape from the splashes of water on the terrace, the guests sought refuge in the Temple of Flora, where they were soaked by pouring water from the ceiling of the temple.
