Villa Victoria (Montevideo)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Villa Victoria has now evidently merged into the barrios of Montevideo, once a separate place.

Villa Victoria was founded by the Liverpool entrepreneur Samuel Lafone in 1842 in front of the Guerra Grande in the area of the Bay of Montevideo between the Arroyo Miguelete and the Arroyo Pantanoso . Lafone ran a so-called Saladero in La Teja , the salt meat factories typical of Uruguay. The establishment was related to this Saladero, because, for example, the workers employed there were provided with free living space by the company. The name was chosen in honor of the English queen. In the last quarter of the 19th century the place developed rapidly. This was due on the one hand to the expansion of the traffic route network through the construction of bridges over Miguelete and Pantanoso as well as the connection to the rail network. Villa Victoria also benefited from the economic rise of the port of Montevideo . Villa Victoria covered an area of 400 manzanas . At the beginning of the 20th century, Villa Victoria had around 2000 inhabitants.
