The Villa Vorster is a residential building in Cologne-Marienburg , Unter den Ulmen 148, built between 1891 and 1894. As an early example of the house type of the English country house in Germany, it is of particular architectural historical value and is a listed building .

Description and history

The villa was built by the Berlin architect Otto March in the English country house style, which he had learned to appreciate through his brother-in-law Fritz Vorster . Vorster, who had lived in England for several years, expressly wanted this style, and March carried out studies on site, so that the Villa Vorster eventually became one of the first almost pure-style English country houses on German soil.

The facade is clad in red between the sandstone structures and grouted in white. The stucco decorations were made by Jäger & Drechsler from Berlin. The roof was covered with Rathenow roof tiles.

The style of the villa was extensively expanded in 1904. It survived both world wars, but was rebuilt in 1953 for the Belgian court martial. Chimneys and glazing inside the building fell victim to this redesign, while the outside of the building did not change much. A listed fence surrounds the Villa Vorster and the associated former porter's house with approx. 80 m² of living space, which was also used at times by the Belgian military . The villa was used as a military court by the Belgian soldiers until 2003. After their withdrawal it fell to the Federal Real Estate Agency. In 2004, the company sold the building against the highest bid to GbR Villa Vorster, a subsidiary of Stefan Frey AG in Cologne. The building and its outdoor facilities were then refurbished to meet the requirements of historical monuments. 1,500 square meters of living space were created, spread over 6 apartments.

The Villa Vorster is a stop on the Rodenkirchen Culture Trail .
