from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In 1935, the remains of a well-preserved Roman villa rustica were excavated near Ditchley ( Oxfordshire , England ) . It has long been considered the best known Roman villa in Britain .

The existence of Roman ruins on this site was known since 1723 when a paved floor was found here. In the following time further remains were found several times, until 1935 systematic excavations were carried out.

The villa was a portico villa with corner risers . At least three stone construction phases could be proven; there is also a previous building made of wood. The facility existed between the beginning of the second and the end of the fourth century. Remnants of wall painting and window glass were found from the furnishings.

The villa stood within a fence in which two farm buildings and a threshing floor were excavated. One of the farm buildings was identified as a granary.
