Vino de Pago
Vino de Pago (VP) is the highest classification under Spanish wine law . It was decided in 2003 by the Cortes Generales , the Spanish Parliament, to improve the quality efforts of Spanish viticulture .
The quality requirements at least correspond to those of the DO Ca. wines. Individual wineries can receive this status under certain conditions. In the meantime, 18 individual companies in different regions of Spain have been awarded this quality level (status: September 2019). The last changes were made to this quality designation with Regulation (EC) 110/2009 (OJ L 37 of February 6, 2009, p. 4) on the definition, description, presentation and labeling and protection of geographical indications of alcoholic beverages. The new law was particularly popular in the Castilla-La Mancha region, where the first Vinos de Pago were made and where most (twelve) VPs exist today. The word pago is a Spanish word for the vineyard.
There are a number of requirements that must be met in order for this award to be granted. The regulatory authority of the wine-growing region in which this winery is located must create the framework conditions for what is not to be expected in every wine region: for example in the Rioja region , since they do not see any need for an even higher or higher level of quality due to their own efforts. to create an additional quality level.
Wines that are labeled as Vinos de Pago may not have any other quality designation or indication of origin. In addition, the wines should reflect a specific character of the respective location. In contrast to the other classification levels, only individual wineries are classified. Another condition is the exclusive processing of own grapes, which must also come from the immediate vicinity of the winery.
