Vinzenz Muchitsch (born February 25, 1873 in St. Leonhard , Styria , † September 18, 1942 in Graz ) was a social democratic Austrian politician and long-time mayor of Graz.

Life

Muchitsch, a trained baker, initially tended towards anarchism in his youth , but his work in the trade union led him towards the reformist wing of social democracy . Muchitsch belonged to the relatively small number of functionaries who already gained prominence during the time of the Danube Monarchy: he had been a member of the Graz municipal council since 1904 , and in 1907 he was elected to the Reichsrat as a result of the first elections according to general equal (male) suffrage . Muchitsch was also a member of the provisional and then the constituent National Assembly of German Austria from 1918-19 . Muchitsch was mayor of Graz from June 14, 1919 to February 12, 1934.

Following the example of Viennese communal socialism, Muchitsch promoted communal housing - the so-called Muchitsch block on Triester Strasse is known - and he succeeded in gaining recognition beyond party lines. He was deposed by the authoritarian Dollfuss government in the course of the February uprising .
