Game description

Virgin Queen is a card-based wargame in which players battle for religious and political influence in late 16th century Europe in the ages of Elizabeth I of England and Philip II of Spain. Each player takes on one of the six great powers, either the Holy Roman Empire, the Ottoman Empire, England, France, Spain or the Protestants, which consist of the Dutch and the Huguenots. There are five minor powers, Ireland, the Papacy, Portugal, Scotland and Venice, that cannot be played and the ties between these states may change during the game. At the beginning of each round, players can either declare war on other players with their major powers or form alliances. Each player has different ruler cards, which can be used for weddings with those of other players in order to gain advantages. Alternatively, players can meet secretly among themselves to negotiate advantages.

In each game round each player plays one of his cards one after the other. As in many other card-based board games, such as Balance of Terror , each card has a value called Command Points. These points can be used to carry out various political, religious, military or research actions. Possibilities for this would be to move his armies or fleets, to besiege fortresses, to carry out pirate actions overseas, to convert the people in his countries or to rebel against the rulers. Alternatively, there are various events on the cards that can be played instead of the command points and can offer the player an advantage. The events can either be actual historical events or general events.

The winner of the game is the one who either has at least 25 victory points at the end of a turn or has the most victory points at the end of the game. Victory points can be achieved in different ways, each of the six factions has different conditions to get victory points. Each party also has the opportunity to achieve an immediate victory by achieving individual goals, the Protestants have to convert a certain number of cities in and around France to Protestants and bring them under Huguenot control.
