Joan Bennett Kennedy (* 2 September 1936 in Riverdale , New York (State) as Virginia Joan Bennett ) from 1958 to 1982 wife of Senator Edward Kennedy .

In high school, she met and became friends with future sisters-in-law Jean Ann Kennedy-Smith and Ethel Skakel-Kennedy .

On November 30, 1958, she married Edward Kennedy, the youngest son of the Kennedy family . When he ran for the 1980 presidential election, the couple were in unity. Kennedy later withdrew his candidacy. In 1982 Edward and Joan divorced.

After that, Joan worked as a musician and took care of her four grandchildren. She also got involved with the disabled and cancer patients (her son Edward lost a leg to cancer, and her daughter got lung cancer in 2003). She was unable to overcome her alcoholism , however, and was therefore taken into police custody six times, and in 2005 she was placed under the guardianship of her children. She was found in Boston on March 30, 2005, with a broken shoulder and a concussion, the circumstances of the accident unknown. During the same year she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent surgery.
