The London Company was allowed to develop the areas south of the 41st parallel up to the 34th parallel, the Plymouth Company in turn the areas north of the 38th parallel up to the 45th parallel ; in the area between the 38th and 41st parallel, the settlements of the societies should keep a distance of at least 100 miles (about 160 km). The two companies were overseen by the England- based Council of Virginia .
Members of the Virginia Company of London then sailed to the New World and founded the Jamestown settlement on the James River in 1607 . The Virginia Company of Plymouth founded the settlement of Popham (today's Phippsburg ) on August 13, 1607 , not far from the mouth of the Kennebec River , in today's US state of Maine , which, however, was abandoned in 1609.
The Virginia Company of London later ran into financial difficulties, so the New World settlement became a royal colony in 1624 .
