Virginia Yep (* 1960 in Lima , Peru ) is a Peruvian ethnomusicologist , musician and composer .

Professional background

Yep began to learn guitar at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música with Nelly Borda at the age of eight and then to study with Juan Brito. At 17 she was also a lecturer there. In the course of her studies she won the prize for the highest qualification at the conservatory and the second prize in the "WA Mozart Competition" , in which various instruments compete with one another. In parallel to her music studies, she completed a degree in journalism at the University of Lima . After her final exam as a concert guitarist , she moved to Madrid on a scholarship to continue studying with José Luis Rodrigo at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música . She received an award in the final competition for the best students in her year. Furthermore, she took part in the most important master classes with José Luis Rodrigo, Flores Chaviano, José Tomás, Vladimir Mikulka and Leo Brouwer as a scholarship holder in Granada, Santiago de Compostela, Ville de Castres, Bilbao, Vigo and Prague.

She gave concert appearances in Peru, South and Central America, USA, Europe, Turkey and China, as well as in various radio and television programs. In Peru she often played as a soloist with the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional, Camerata de Cuerdas de Trujillo and Orquesta de Cámara de Lima; she also played with various chamber music groups . She came to Germany on a scholarship and did her doctorate in comparative musicology at the Free University of Berlin. Parallel to her concert activities, she composes and does music research with a focus on music from the coast of Peru. She currently lives in Berlin, where she works as a concert guitarist, composer and university lecturer.
