Virtaniemi ( Northern Sami : Virdáánjargâ , skoltsamisch : Ve'rddnjargg ) is a former village and a closed border crossing in the village of Inari in Finland on the border with Russia . Virtaniemi was founded in 1910 and is located on the southeast corner of Lake Inari at the starting point of the Pasvik River. The place is connected to the Finnish and Russian road networks via the 969 Nellimintie road. The nearby village of Nellim is about eight kilometers away. The temporary border crossing in Virtaniemi was closed in 2011 and the border guard stopped in 2014.
