He had been Commander in Chief of British troops in North Africa during World War II . The name of the title after the city of Tunis refers to his services during the Tunisian campaign .
Along with the earliest dignity , he was given the subordinate title of Baron Rideau , of Ottawa and of Castle Derg in the County of Tyrone . The marriage apparent of the respective earl bears the courtesy title of Lord Rideau derived from it . As early as March 1, 1946, the first Earl had been given the subordinate title Viscount Alexander of Tunis , of Errigal in the County of Donegal .
