Earl of Clancarty , in the Irish Counties of Cork and of Galway , is a British hereditary title of nobility created twice in the Peerage of Ireland .

The Earls' family seat was Garbally Court near Ballinasloe in County Galway, Ireland until 1922 .

Awards

The title was first created in 1658 for Donough MacCarty, 2nd Viscount Muskerry . He was a supporter of the king during the English Civil War . The title was withdrawn from the fourth earl in 1691 after he supported the Jacobites .

The second award took place in 1803 to William Trench, 1st Viscount Dunlo . He was a longtime member of the Irish House of Commons . He was directly descended from a sister of the first earl of the first bestowal.

Subordinate title

The first earl of the second bestowal had already been raised to Baron Kilconnel , of Garbally in the County of Galway, in 1797 , and to Viscount Dunlo , of Dunlo and Ballinasloe in the Counties of Galway and Roscommon in 1801 . Both titles belong to the Peerage of Ireland.

His son, the second earl, was an important politician and diplomat of his time. Among other things, he was British ambassador to the Netherlands . In 1815 he was promoted to Baron Trench , of Garbally in the County of Galway, then in 1823 to Viscount Clancarty , of the County of Cork . Through these titles, which belong to the Peerage of the United Kingdom , the respective earl had an automatic seat in the House of Lords until the House of Lords Act 1999 .

All titles are listed as subordinate titles to the earl dignity. The respective title heir carries the courtesy title Viscount Dunlo .

Other titles

The father of the first earl of the first bestowal had already been made Viscount Muskerry in 1628 . This title, which also belonged to the Peerage of Ireland, expired with the first earl dignity.

As early as 1638, the first earl of the first award himself had been raised to baronet in the baronage of Nova Scotia . This dignity was also revoked in 1691.

1815 the second Earl of the second ceremony of the Dutch became king William I of the Netherlands title of Marquess of Heusden awarded. This is still run by the respective earl today.
