Nicholas Power Richard Le Poer Trench, 9th Earl of Clancarty, 8th Marquess of Heusden (born May 1, 1952 ) is a British politician and a peer in the Peerage of Ireland . He is one of the elected hereditary peers who sit as a crossbencher in the House of Lords . He is also the holder of the Dutch nobility title Markies van Heusden , which was awarded to his ancestor Richard Trench, 2nd Earl of Clancarty , for his services as ambassador to the Netherlands in 1815.

life and career

Trench was the only son of Power Edward Ford Le Poer Trench (1917-1975), the second son from the second marriage of William Frederick Le Poer Trench, 5th Earl of Clancarty , and Jocelyn Louise Courteney († 1962). He has a sister who is younger than him, Caroline Jessica Mary (born December 3, 1954). She is a painter and graphic artist .

He attended Ashford Grammar School in Ashford in the county of Middlesex and the Polytechnic in Plymouth ( Plymouth Polytechnic ) that the University of Plymouth belongs. He also studied in the United States at the University of Colorado in Denver , Colorado and Boulder , Colorado.

Trench is a freelance artist . He worked as a painter, writer , translator and filmmaker . As an artist, he uses the name Nick Trench. He runs a blog .

Trench has presented his works at exhibitions since the 1980s. In 2007 he had a solo exhibition at the Hepsibah Gallery in London. In 2010 he was involved in the group show At Play ii at the South Hill Park Arts Center in Bracknell , Berkshire . In 2007 he presented his pictures and paintings in a double exhibition for the first time together with his sister Caroline Le Poer Trench (as artist: Cally Trench) in the exhibition HOME at the Penny School Gallery in Kingston upon Thames , Surrey .

He is Secretary ( Secretary ) of Dysart Press Ltd , a media company, which refers to journalism has specialized and translation work.

Trench lives in London , is married and has one daughter.

Membership in the House of Lords

Since the death of his childless uncle Brinsley Le Poer Trench, 8th Earl of Clancarty (1911-1995), whose title he inherited, Trench belonged to the House of Lords . He officially took his seat on May 24, 1996 and delivered his inaugural address on May 15, 1996. He is a crossbencher in the House of Lords. He took his seat as Viscount Clancarty , as this title is part of the Peerage of the United Kingdom , while the title Earl of Clancarty belongs to the Peerage of Ireland and was not associated with a membership in the House of Lords before 1999.

The House of Lords Act 1999 ended its membership on November 11, 1999. Trench ran unsuccessfully in the election for one of the 28 seats for Crossbencher . He was ranked 37th out of 79 candidates.

In four by-elections for incumbent hereditary peers , he ran without success; in two cases he came second. On June 23, 2010, it was announced that he had won the by-election on the death of Mark Colville, 4th Viscount Colville of Culross , who had passed away in April 2010. Trench took his seat on July 1, 2010.

On the official website of the House of Lords, he lists art and culture , public welfare and education as his political priorities . He mentions France , Germany and the Netherlands as states of particular interest .
