Viscount Sidmouth
Viscount Sidmouth , of Sidmouth in the County of Devon , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .
The Viscount family home was Upottery Manor in Devon, which was sold in 1953.
Award
The title was bestowed on former British Prime Minister Henry Addington on January 12, 1805 .
After the end of his term of office in 1804, he was supposed to receive an earl dignity and subordinate titles, namely that of Earl of Banbury , as was customary at the time . Addington refused, however, as he wanted to keep his seat in the House of Commons . In the following year, however, he took over the office of Lord President of the Council in the Pitt cabinet , for which he was then awarded the title of Viscount Sidmouth .
