Viscount Wentworth

Viscount Wentworth was a hereditary British title of nobility , bestowed once in the Peerage of England and twice in the Peerage of Great Britain .

Awards

The title was first awarded on December 13, 1628 in the Peerage of England to Thomas Wentworth, 1st Baron Wentworth . As early as July 22, 1628 he had been raised to Baron Wentworth , of Wentworth-Woodhouse , and to Baron of Newmarch and Oversley . On January 12, 1640 he was also raised to Earl of Strafford and Baron Raby . In 1641 he was executed for high treason and his titles were revoked. In 1662 his son obtained the restoration of the title of 2nd Earl. When he died on October 16, 1695, all of his titles were extinguished with the exception of the barony Raby, which fell to his second nephew, Thomas Wentworth , as the third baron.

This same 3rd Baron Raby, the Viscount title was recreated on June 29, 1711 in the Peerage of Great Britain, together with the superior title Earl of Strafford . With the death of his nephew, the 3rd Earl, on August 7, 1799, all three titles finally expired.

In the third award, the title was bestowed on May 5, 1762 in the Peerage of Great Britain to Edward Noel, 8th Baron Wentworth . He had already inherited the title Baron Wentworth , created on December 2, 1529 in the Peerage of England for his ancestor Sir Thomas Wentworth in 1745 . The Viscount title expired on the death of his son, the 2nd Viscount on April 17, 1815, the barony fell in Abeyance .
