Baron Raby was a hereditary British title of nobility , which was awarded once each in the Peerage of England and the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

Awards

In the first bestowal, the title Baron Raby , of Raby in the County or Bishopric of Durham , was created on January 12, 1640 in the Peerage of England for Thomas Wentworth, 1st Viscount Wentworth , as a subordinate title to the title Earl of Strafford, which was also conferred on him . The title of baron was given to him with the special addition that, in the absence of male descendants, he could also be passed on to his brother and his male descendants. As early as July 22, 1628 he was raised to Baron Wentworth , of Wentworth-Woodhouse , and Baron of Newmarch and Oversley , and on December 13, 1628 to Viscount Wentworth . In 1641 he was executed for high treason and his titles were revoked. In 1662 his son obtained the restoration of the title of 2nd Earl. When he died on October 16, 1695, all of his nobility titles lapsed with the exception of the barony Raby, which, according to the special note, fell to his second nephew, Thomas Wentworth , as the third baron. This same 3rd Baron Raby the title Earl of Strafford was recreated on June 29, 1711 in the Peerage of Great Britain, together with the subordinate title Viscount Wentworth . With the death of his nephew, the 3rd Earl, on August 7, 1799, all three titles finally expired.

In the second award, the title Baron Raby , of Raby Castle in the County of Durham in the Peerage of the United Kingdom for William Vane, 1st Marquess of Cleveland , was newly created on January 29, 1833 , as a subordinate title to the title awarded at the same time Duke of Cleveland . As early as 1792 he had inherited the titles Earl of Darlington and Viscount Barnard , both created in 1754 in the Peerage of Great Britain , and Baron Barnard , created in 1698 in the Peerage of England, from his father . On September 17, 1827, he was also raised to Marquess of Cleveland . The first duke was followed one after the other by his three sons, who, however, all died childless. When the 4th duke died on August 21, 1891, the dukedom and all subordinate titles were extinguished, with the exception of the barony of Barnard, which fell to a distant relative.
