Baron Barnard , of Barnard Castle in the Bishopric of Durham , is a hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of England .

Awarding and other titles

The title was created on July 25, 1698 for former MP Christopher Vane .

His grandson, the 3rd Baron, was also raised to Earl of Darlington , in the County of Durham, and Viscount Barnard , of Barnard Castle in the County of Durham , on April 3, 1754 . His grandson, the 3rd Earl, was elevated to Marquess of Cleveland on September 17, 1827 and Duke of Cleveland and Baron Raby , of Raby Castle in the County of Durham on January 29, 1833 . All three sons of the 1st duke died childless, so that when the youngest of them, the 4th duke, died in 1891, all titles mentioned except the barony of Barnard expired. The latter inherited his fourth nephew Henry de Vere Vane as the 9th Baron Barnard. Due to his distant kinship, his claim to inheritance was not retrospectively recognized by the Committee for Privileges of the House of Lords until 1892 .

The ancestral seat of the barons is Raby Castle near Staindrop in County Durham.
