John Vane, 11th Baron Barnard

Henry John Neville Vane, 11th Baron Barnard , TD , JP , DL , ( September 21, 1923 - April 3, 2016 ) was a British peer and politician ( Crossbencher ).

Life

John Vane, 11th Baron Barnard was born to Christopher Vane, 10th Baron Barnard (1888–1964) and his wife Sylvia Mary Straker († 1993). He attended Eton College in Berkshire and studied at the University of Durham , where he graduated with a Master of Science degree.

In 1942 he joined the Royal Air Force (Volunteer Reserve), where he became a navigation officer (flight officer) in 1945 ; in the Royal Air Force he served from 1942 to 1946. In 1948 he became a lieutenant in the Northumberland Hussars ( Territorial Army ). Until 1966 he was an officer in the Northumberland Hussars; from 1964 to 1966 he was the commanding officer as Lieutenant Colonel .

Vane's political career began in local politics . From 1952 to 1961 he was a County Councilor in the County Council of County Durham . From 1956 to 1970 he was Deputy Lieutenant of County Durham. In 1960 he was with the Territorial Decoration awarded Medal, 1961 he was magistrate (Justice of the Peace) for the County Durham. From 1970 to 1988 he was finally Lord Lieutenant of County Durham.

Vane has supported numerous local organizations, including the Staindrop Scouts, the Teesdale and Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue Team and Scarth Hall in Staindrop . He was also the patron of the Upper Teesdale Agricultural Support Services (UTASS). From 1963 to 1965 he was Joint Master of the Zetland Hunt.

Membership in the House of Lords

With the death of his father on October 19, 1964, Vane inherited the title of Baron Barnard and the then associated seat in the House of Lords . He was a crossbencher in the House of Lords. In Hansard two word contributions are documented by him between 1966 and 1971st He gave his inaugural address on March 8, 1966 as part of a debate on defense policy and the Territorial Army. His further remarks in February 1971 took place in a debate on agriculture . On October 28, 1992, at the beginning of the 1992/93 session, he formally took the oath of office as a member of the House of Lords.

In the 1997/98 session he was present on 12 days. He was a member of the House of Lords until November 11, 1999. Its membership ended by the House of Lords Act 1999 .

Private

On October 8, 1952, he married Lady Davina Mary Cecil (* 1931), the daughter of David Cecil, 6th Marquess of Exeter , in St Margaret's Church in Westminster . The marriage produced five children, a son and four daughters. The marriage ended in divorce in 1992.

Vane died on April 3, 2016, aged 92, with his family on the Raby Castle family estate near Staindrop , County Durham. He was a member of the parish of St. Mary's Church in Staindrop. The private funeral ceremony took place on April 9, 2016 in the chapel of Raby Castle. A later memorial service follows in St. Mary's Church in Staindrop. Title heir is his only son Henry Francis Cecil Vane as 12th Baron Barnard.
