The title was first bestowed on January 12, 1640 in the Peerage of England to Thomas Wentworth, 1st Viscount Wentworth , along with the subordinate title of Baron Raby . As early as July 22, 1628 he was raised to Baron Wentworth , of Wentworth-Woodhouse , and Baron of Newmarch and Oversley , and on December 13, 1628 to Viscount Wentworth . In 1641 he was executed for high treason and his titles were revoked. In 1662 his son obtained the restoration of the title of 2nd Earl. When he died on October 16, 1695, all of his titles were extinguished with the exception of the barony Raby, which fell to his second nephew, Thomas Wentworth , as the third baron.

This very 3rd Baron Raby was re-created the Earl title on June 29, 1711 in the Peerage of Great Britain, together with the subordinate title Viscount Wentworth , of Wentworth Woodhouse and of Stainborough in the County of York. With the death of his nephew, the 3rd Earl, on August 7, 1799, all three titles finally expired.

The third bestowal of the title was on September 18, 1847 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom to John Byng, 1st Baron of Strafford , along with the subordinate title Viscount Enfield , of Enfield in the County of Middlesex . He had already been raised to Baron Strafford , of Harmondsworth in the County of Middlesex on May 12, 1835 . Today's title holder has been William Byng as 9th Earl since 2016 .
