The Visualization Toolkit (VTK) is an open-source - C ++ - graphics library , which is particularly suitable for 3D computer graphics with a focus for scientific visualization .

history

VTK was created in a research department at General Electric . Initially, VTK was used to visualize image data from imaging processes (patent for the Marching Cubes algorithm), but its field of application was soon expanded. Kitware, founded by Will Schroeder, Ken Martin and Bill Lorensen, is now in charge of development at VTK.

VTK consists of over 700 classes. It has grown very large now and contains more than 1,000,000 lines of C ++ code. In addition to C ++, access to VTK is also possible using Tcl / Tk , Java , Python and .NET .

Patents

The US patent for the Marching Cubes algorithm expired on June 5, 2005.
