Viterra (agricultural company)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Viterra Inc. was an international Canadian agricultural company .

history

The company's origins stretch back to Canadian agricultural cooperatives in the 1920s, which became the largest grain trading conglomerate in the country and became the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool (SWP), which went public in the 1990s . After the takeover of the competitor Agricore United from Winnipeg , Manitoba Province, in 2007, SWP was renamed Viterra . The new company, headquartered in Regina, Saskatchewan, was Canada's largest grain trader. Over time, Viterra diversified into other areas of the agricultural industry and operated beyond Canada in the wheat-growing regions of the USA, Australia, New Zealand and China and in other countries. Viterra had grown into one of the world's largest grain traders and employed up to 6,000 people. At the end of 2012, Viterra was taken over for around 6.1 billion dollars (almost 5 billion euros) by Glencore Xstrata (Glencore International) and its Canadian bidding partners Agrium and Richardson International , which then received the Canadian parts of the Viterra Group.
