VivaDesigner (formerly VivaPress ) is a typesetting program from Viva Technology for Linux , Mac OS X and Windows operating systems.

It is considered to be a well-maintained and feature-rich DTP program. Among other things, as the only (commercial) alternative to the younger Scribus , the software is well known. On other platforms, it competes with Adobe InDesign and QuarkXPress and offers a similar range of functions with a different user interface that is more comparable to that of Corel Ventura 10.

There is a restricted version (without spell checking, hyphenation, Pantone color palettes, PDF import and export, Pantone and HKS color model) for free use for private purposes and various commercial licenses. The user interface is based on Qt .

history

The software was created around 1990 as “VivaPress” for the classic Mac OS on behalf of Linotype , which, however, did not accept it, which is why the program was developed by Viva until it was ready for the market and then marketed itself. In 1991 Viva went public with VivaPress.

The program offered techniques that were previously unknown in other programs, but could only conquer a comparatively small market share against the established competition from PageMaker and QuarkXPress.

The strategic decision to provide exposure studios with a free version nevertheless ensured that record files made with VivaPress could also be processed in most exposure studios.

The current version of VivaPress is VivaPress Professional 3. However, the product was unable to assert itself internationally against the market power of QuarkXPress and was discontinued, although the typesetting technology was continuously developed because the company offered imposition software, solutions for large print and for automated media production (publishing Server) was still active in the DTP market.

In December 2004 the software came back on the market as VivaDesigner (initially as a public beta version) for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X and is now available in version 9. VivaDesigner 9 has been improved and expanded in many areas. In addition to new functions, the speed and file compatibility with Adobe InDesign have been improved using Adobe's open IDML exchange format .
