Vjekoslav Glavač

Vjekoslav Glavač (born June 4, 1930 in Zagreb ) is a German botanist of Yugoslav origin.

Life

After completing primary school (1940) and high school (1948), he studied agriculture and forestry at the University of Zagreb. From 1955 he worked as a lecturer in the forestry department. Glavač received his doctorate on December 9, 1961 with a thesis on the alluvial forests in the Posavina and on the Croatian Drava .

He then went to Zurich for three years at the Technical University (ETH) as a research assistant at the institutes for silviculture and geobotany. From 1966 to 1972 he worked in the same position at the Federal Research Institute for Nature Conservation and Landscape Ecology in Bonn-Bad Godesberg. In 1972 he was appointed full university professor for plant, vegetation and landscape ecology at the comprehensive university in Kassel and he received German citizenship in 1975 . Glavač was a long-time member of the Hesse government's council for nature conservation. In 1988/89 he was dean of the biological and chemical faculty at the University of Kassel and chairman of the senate. He led several scientific research projects, financed by the Federal Ministry for Research and Technology (BMFT) and the German Research Foundation (DFG). At the age of 62, he retired in 1992.
