Ivo Horvat
Ivo Horvat (born October 7, 1897 in Čazma , † April 23, 1963 in Zagreb ) was a Yugoslav botanist and university professor. Its botanical author abbreviation is " Horvat ".
Life
After attending school in Dubravica and Samobor , he studied natural sciences ( above all botany and geography ) at the University of Zagreb from 1916 and received his doctorate in 1920 with a botanical thesis on the phylogenesis of ferns . He then became a research assistant at the University's Botanical Institute. After his habilitation, Horvat was associate professor from 1931 and full professor for systematic botany and geobotany at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Zagreb from 1940 . He was also head of the Botanical Institute and the Faculty's Botanical Garden. In 1947 the institute moved to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, where Horvat was also a full professor.
Services
In addition to Günther Beck-Mannagetta (1856–1931) and Lujo Adamović , Horvat was one of the best experts on the vegetation of Southeast Europe . He was one of the first representatives of the Braun Blanquet School in Yugoslavia . His main areas of work were systematics and phylogenesis, especially of ferns, moss science and plant sociology . The forest and grassland companies in Southeastern Europe and their locations were a focus of his work, always keeping an eye on the useful application for forestry and agriculture , but also nature conservation .
Horvat had close contact with other vegetation ecologists in various European countries, as evidenced by visiting professorships at the universities of Hamburg, Zurich, Krakow, Warsaw, Halle an der Saale, Giessen and Graz. He was also active in numerous associations, such as the IUFRO . He was also one of the initiators for the designation of the national parks Paklenica and Risnjak .
Heinz Ellenberg and Vjekoslav Glavač edited his monumental draft for a description of the vegetation of Southeast Europe and published it in 1974 as Vegetation of Southeast Europe .
