Vladimír Kocman

Vladimír Kocman (born April 5, 1956 in České Budějovice ) is a former Czechoslovak judoka .

Athletic career

The 1.97 m tall Kocman competed in the heavyweight or open class, he fought for Dukla Banská Bystrica .

In 1976 he won a bronze medal at the European Junior Championships. At the European Championships in 1980 he took fifth place in the heavyweight division, and won a bronze medal in the open class. At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , he competed in the heavyweight division. In the quarter-finals he was defeated by the French Angelo Parisi . With victories in the hopes over the Poland Wojciech Reszko and the British Paul Radburn , Kocman secured an Olympic bronze medal.

In 1981 he finished fifth in the open class at the European Championships . At the world championships he won a bronze medal in the heavyweight division, in the decisive fight he defeated Fred Olhorn from the GDR. In 1982 Kocman lost in the final of the open class at the Student World Championships to the Japanese Hitoshi Saitō . 1983 Saitō and Kocman met again in the final of the World Championships in Moscow and Kocman won the silver medal again. At the European Championships in 1984 Kocman was defeated in the semifinals by Dietmar Pufahl from the GDR, but won the battle for bronze against Alexei Tjurin from the Soviet Union. In the Olympic Games 1984 Kocman could not participate because of the Olympic boycott. In the competitions held as an alternative by the socialist states, he reached the final in the open class and was defeated there by Chabil Biktashev from the Soviet Union.

National championship title

Vladimír Kocman won a total of nine national championship titles in Czechoslovakia.

  • Heavyweight: 1977, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985
  • Open class: 1984, 1985

In 1981 he was also a Slovak champion.
