Vobkent ( Cyrillic Вобкент ; Russian Вабкент Wabkent ) is a city in the Uzbek province of Bukhara , located about 25 km north of the city of Bukhara at 240 m above sea level. In 1989 the census counted about 12,400 inhabitants in the city, according to a calculation for 2009 the population is 17,896. Vobkent is the capital of a district of the same name .
The main tourist attraction of Vobkents is a 28.7 m high minaret from the Qarakhanid period , built between 1197 and 1199. The minaret is similar to the Kalon minaret in Bukhara, but looks less elegant.
A market is held in Vobkent on Sundays.
